Ryan Matthew Cohn’s oddities collection
I think Ryan Matthew Cohn is the most representative example of oddity-obsessed collector in modernity: his fascination for mysterious artifacts began since he was a teenager and reflects itself now in what is his home and live-in museum.
Throughout the years he has made up his collection of natural ephemera, medical curiosities, taxidermy, osteological remnants and any other kind of weirdness, concerning natural history, in the world, and has arranged them meticulously in the space creating an enigmatic and grotesque atmosphere.
Surely it would prove difficult for most people to get a peaceful night’s sleep in here, but Ryan could not feel more at home!
As a professional silversmith, Cohn divides his attention between his osteological displays and his metal craft. In addition to creating custom jewelry, Cohn makes all of the hardware for his displays in his workshop, and many of the stands for his skulls and articulated skeletons are forged to resemble antique lighting and scientific equipment. He’s one of four owners of a store on the Lower East Side, in New York, called Against Nature, and he takes care about all of the accessories.
Every single object that sorrounds him collaborates to create that air of mistery, that particular macabre charm which sets him apart from most collectors in the antique field.
